The Lowry
The Lowry opened on the 28th April 2000 and was an integral part of a £106 million development
project along with the Imperial War Museum North and Lifting Bridge to Trafford Wharfside all
designed to regenerate the run down former Salford Docks. The Lowry building is located at the
former Pier 8 site and covers an area roughly the size of five football pitches breathing new life to
the disused docks.
There really is always something going at the Lowry all year round with it hosting varied arts and
cultural shows all year round catering to varied tastes for both adults and children and even both
at the same time occasionally .I recently took my child to see a performance of the Gruffaloe at the
Lowry and think I enjoyed it as much as he did ,maybe more. It has two main theatres that could
be showing anything from performances of opera, ballet, musicals, drama and plays to mention
just a few of the wide and varied cultural shows it stages in its ample theatres. There is a 1,730
capacity seating theatre and two smaller seating capacity theatres that are 466 seats and 180 seats
respectively.
Most Salfordians will know that The Lowry is named after the famous local deceased artist L.S Lowry
and would not be complete without the Lowry galleries and exhibitions which display his work
alongside those of other artists. The gallery is a 1,610 metre space devoted to showcasing art and
stages various exhibitions throughout the year but is primarily home to L.S Lowry and the famous
paintings described as matchstick men by many due to the style in which he painted figures.
There are many cafes, bars and restaurants located at the Lowry to enjoy a drink and bite to eat
and makes it an excellent place to meet and socialise at Salford Quays. It has great waterside views
and is great in the Summer when the weather allows to enjoy the outdoor seating and enjoy the
views and maybe see the varied events that take place in the nearby ship canal like the increasingly
popular Salford Dragon boat race
There is a passenger drop off point right outside the main entrance so ……….Swinton travel
