Imperial War Museum North
Located at Salford Quays and offering free admission the Imperial War Museum North is now an
established attraction for the whole of the North West. It is an award winning museum and hosts
a variety of permanent and guest exhibitions throughout the year that are informative and visually
impressive for visitors of all backgrounds and ages ranging from schoolchildren to actual veterans
who fought in the wars it intends to educate visitors about.
There are friendly and informative staff available to offer guided tours and enhance any visitor’s
experience of the thought provoking displays and exhibitions that the museum hosts. There are
even specially designed activities available for families making it a good choice to keep the children
occupied on a rainy day perhaps and offers all the amenities you would expect including baby
changing facilities and cloakrooms. Group visits can be easily booked in advance and operate on a
pay on the day basis usually which is good if your plans change last minute as they often can do if
children are involved
The Imperial War Museum North is not a poor Northern relative of the famous London Imperial War
Museum and hosts a variety of world renowned collections of war memorabilia and photography.
It is currently hosting an exhibition of Gulf War photography until the 6th March 2011 by acclaimed
photographer John Keane to mark twenty years passing since the first Gulf War began in 1991.
Exhibitions change throughout the year so it is worthwhile checking the Museum website in advance
to see what is on when you intend to visit.
Permanent displays held at the War Museum include the award winning the Big Picture show
featuring surround sound and projected images on the walls. It has to be experienced first hand to
be fully appreciated as the ground rumbles during the sensory experience. Three different shows are
repeated at different times during the day, the War at Home, Weapons of War and Children at War.
There are the Silos, themed display and exhibition areas and the Timelines and Timestacks. Plenty
to see and do as the old cliché goes. Objects of special interest at the museum are the artillery gun
that fired the first shot for our side in WW1 and a Russian T-34 tank but really worth a visit is the
Air Shard viewing Platform .If you are not scared of heights that is. If you have vertigo better not
because it is high but has a really great view of Manchester and the Quays and
